Follow these steps to ensure a safe and warm winter:

1. Provide a clear pathway to your propane tank and keep driveways accessible in the event you need a propane delivery.
2. Just like walkways, propane equipment needs to be cleared of snow after a storm. If a propane tank is buried under several feet of snow, it is best to use a broom to carefully clear the snow off the tank and around any exposed piping, regulator, gauges and tubing.
3. Gas intake and exhaust vents for the clothes dryer, furnace and water heater should be clear of snow or ice. A four-foot area should be kept clear around the vents to prevent high winds from funneling in.
4. Regulator vents on the propane system should be free of condensation. If frozen, it could cause a malfunction. If a regulator vent is clogged with iceor snow, contact us immediately.
5. Please mark underground tank’s location with a brightly colored stake or flag several feet above the ground so we can identify your tank in the event of a heavy snow storm.
6. Last but not least, please check the propane tank percentage gauge periodically and call us if it reads between 20-30 percent. Or, before you call a repairman, in case you might be out of propane!

Burkardt’s LP Gas now offers an Automatic Withdrawal option from the bank account of your choice. Simply contact us for an enrollment form. We can deduct your deliveries or Budget payments out of your bank account on the day they are due. We will even email a reminder when the amount is withdrawn from your account.

If you would like one equal monthly payment year round enroll in our Monthly Budget Plan. Burkardt’s averages your prior 12 months propane usage and spreads the amount into equal monthly payments. The Illinois Propane Education and Research Council has increased its appliance rebate amounts to now include:

• A $350 REBATE for installing or replacing a gas furnace.
• A $250 REBATE for installing a tankless water heater or a propane power vent water heater.
• A $250 REBATE for installing a direct vent gas fireplace.
• A $200 REBATE (NEW!) for installing a vented garage heater.
• A $100 REBATE for a standard vent water heater.

Rebates are available whether you’re replacing a fuel oil, electric, or gas model, or in new construction.
Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to $500 per household per year.  We’ll be happy to help you get your rebate and help you start saving

In Jan. 2007, an Illinois law was passed requiring all homes to have at least one carbon monoxide (CO) detector in operating condition within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes.

Burkardt’s L.P. Gas recommends installing both a propane and a CO detector in your home for your safety.

Symptoms of CO poisoning:

• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Irregular breathing
• Nausea

Detectors provide an additional measure of security and are an inexpensive way to insure your family’s safety.

We recommend purchasing a detector that provides an LCD read-out of the actual CO level (Kidde Nighthawk) as well as the propane and CO detectors from your local hardware store. Be sure the units you buy are listed by Underwriters Laboratories (look for the UL symbol on the package).

To be sure propane gas detectors operate properly, install and maintain them as the manufacturer recommends.

Severe thunderstorms and tornados were experienced recently leaving area residents without power for several days. Tornados were reported touching down along a 36-mile stretch west of Rockford along I-90. What a difference a year makes! Last year at this time we were in the middle of the busiest grain drying season we’ve experienced since Burkardt’s L.P. Gas began in 1982!

Last year yielded such a late and wet bumper crop that we practically worked nonstop keeping up with the propane demand! Propane distribution problems compounded the challenges of a busy drying season. We’re thankful we aren’t experiencing these type of issues this year.
